This was an incredible place! We thought before we got there we would only stay maybe four or five days, but before we knew it we had been there an awesome two weeks five days! We got to stay here for free because we worked . This place has a huge fishing lake, ball field, giant gymnasium, the beautiful Saluda river, a paintball/airsoft field, rappelling tower, very nice cabins, obstacle course, skateboarding ramps, and a campground coming very soon! All right, there’s so much to talk about I’m gonna take it one at a time. (I’ll talk about The Refuge later.) First, if you like paintball or airsoft wars this is the place for you. There is an awesome field littered with hay bales, stacks of tires and, at the far end, a fort to defend with your life. There are also two other fighting areas. One with two small bunkers hidden in the woods along the river. The other is half field, half woods with another small bunker and lots of natural hiding places. Don’t worry if you don’t have a paintball gun because Saluda River Paintball (the name of the company) has everything you need. Mr. Brent “Country” Powell let me play with one of his groups while we were there. It was fun! I was a “sniper” most of the time. Then we got to watch a group of airsoft guys come out and fight. It was cool.
If you fish then this is the spot. The lake is stocked with bass, crappie, blue gill, etc. There is a nice floating dock to fish off of. If you have a boat you can cruise around. I hooked a big one on the far end of the pond out of my kayak. I reeled it in close to my kayak but it made one final leap into the air and broke loose. Down at the river there are some monster catfish. Unfortunately, I am a very inexperienced fishermen. We had a great time though.
We had a great time at the obstacle course. It was challenging for all of us. It has some very unique obstacles I’ve never seen before. After doing it three or four times it will wear you out (it did me)!
The gym is really fun. It has a stage, skateboard ramps, a volley ball net, basketball hoops, and a cafeteria. We had a great time “training”. The gym also serves as the headquarters for airsoft and paintball wars.
Hanna and I went to The Refuge both Tuesdays we were here. It is a great ministry run by Country (also the manager of River Oaks Retreat). Youth can come every Tuesday and skateboard, play pool, and get some great discipleship. Country and his wife lead a bible study. He also sells skateboards, and paintball guns there.
